There's also straight up burn, though that runs closer to the 300-500 mark if you're out the manabase and want to go full naya non budget.

Burn requires Goblin Guide a lot more than 8Whack does, especially if you're going for the mono-red version.

imagine the kuldotha red decks of old, add in reckless bushwhacker as a friend to goblin bushwhacker along with a few goblin friends and you have 8-whack

the key component is that it's monocolored and doesn't really want much in terms of nonbasics (because it's basically all 1-drops so it wants to cast its spells now)

here's a list

18 Mountain
1 Contested War Zone

4 Memnite
4 Ornithopter
4 Signal Pest
4 Legion Loyalist
4 Foundry Street Denizen
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Goblin Bushwhacker
4 Reckless Bushwhacker

4 Kuldotha Rebirth
4 Lightning Bolt
1 Devastating Summons

Saving this for if I get into Magic again.

True. And while I personally don't mind playing weird things in Modern (my "go to" competitive deck is RUG pyro right now, while I work on a brew or three) I figured I should throw in the basics for a viable competitive but cheap(er) Modern deck. 8Rack hasn't seen real play in a few years now, and also requires LotVs, so I don't really consider it an entity beyond strict Tier 2 status.

I've seen 8whack in play, but I have no idea how viable it actually is as an archetype. My bet is that it's a worse affinity, but I lack sufficient knowledge.

Basically, after CSI removed my position, I could no longer afford to play magic, so I gave up. Now I'm looking to start up again, but literally have 0 cards and limited funds to obtain any.

Twin's been claiming his deck is tier 1. You could put it to the test.

Please, this is Urza we're talking about. Of course he could crush a Modern tournament with Twin's deck. He could crush a Modern tournament by taking two random draft decks - that I drafted, so you just know they're going to be horrible - and amalgamating them into something roughly approximating a decent-looking 75.

...I kind of want to actually see him try to do that at some point.

Nightwalker, please. You don't want to play anything other than weird things in Modern. You design Modern decks like I draft.

So...hypothetically if I wanted to get back into mtg what would be the cheapest real deck I could build for standard/modern?

Please keep in mind, the only cards I have are from my wedding presents or gifts, so nothing standard.

I mean, if you really wanted to go deep, we could do the draft thing I just mentioned. Like, I could put together a list of decks I've drafted since getting back into MTG, you pick two of them, I ship you the cards, and you try to put together something resembling a coherent deck from that. I'd even get to make a spreadsheet!

(Note that this deck would by necessity have to be Modern-legal. I did one DTK/DTK/FRF draft, two BFZ/BFZ/BFZ drafts, and one SOI/SOI/SOI draft, and I highly doubt you could make a Standard deck from the contents of those.)

Lolol, well that's certainly true nowadays. I did start the format on good old tier 1 Pod. After that I got successively creative.

This...

Also, I may have built that 8-whack list on a whim. I have a "funny" story behind this deck though.

At a GPT, my buddy ran into this deck. It was our first time seeing the deck, and the guy was playing only snow-covered mountains. He had no idea what was happening until it exploded and killed him turn 3.

We ask him how his match went. He said 0-2. We asked what he played against. He goes "I have no fucking idea, pretty sure it was 'Snow-Mountain Goblin Storm"

So now, I'm running Snow-Mountain Goblin Storm.

I ran the forums for GM, which means my direct employer was CSI. I was paid in store credit to run the forums as lead admin.
